Adobe Inc announced on Tuesday that it has reworked several of its tools to create three-dimensional content to make them work well on Apple Inc computers that use the iPhone maker’s proprietary “M” series chips.
Adobe has long been a major player in providing software for creative fields such as photography, graphic design, and filmmaking. But Adobe has been working to develop more tools to create the three-dimensional worlds and objects used in video games and, increasingly, the so-called metaversewhere companies like Meta Platforms Inc hope to use augmented reality technology to overlay digital content onto the real world.
Adobe acquired software tools called Substance 3D in 2019 when it bought French company Allegorithmic for an undisclosed amount. The tool helps creators of films like “Frozen 2” and games to imbue the digital objects they create with a wide range of realistic textures, such as wood or leather.
Adobe said it reworked the software to run on Apple’s proprietary chips, a move that should help Apple gain traction. While Apple laptops and desktops are widely used in some creative fields like music production, game developers tend to rely on PCs that can be paired with powerful graphics chips from Nvidia Corp that render more realistic graphics.
But Apple’s new chips have added new graphics processing power, and Adobe plans to take full advantage of that in new software, said Francois Cottin, chief marketing officer at Adobe.
“For these types of use cases, vertical integration is really key, from application to chip,” Cottin said. “We’ve worked closely with Apple on future-facing use cases. I think Substance 3D definitely represents that.”
Adobe also announced on Tuesday that it has brought in new customers for its three-dimensional content creation tools, including German fashion brand Hugo Boss and outdoor footwear brand Salomon Group.
